Meijer is a grocery store franchise that is available throughout the state of Michigan and there are currently more than 200 store locations available. Recently, the franchise announced that it would offer check-cashing services at its stores as a means of added convenience for their regular customers.

Prior Registration is Required

Before you’ll be allowed to cash a check at Meijer’s, you will need to register with the Certegy Verification system. This process usually takes approximately 7 working days to complete and once this has been done, you will be asked to provide photo identification and/or proof of employment to complete the registration process. It is free of charge to register with Certegy.

If you are a member of Meijer Credit Union however, you will be able to cash checks without having to pay fees at Meijer stores. 


Before you will be allowed to cash a check at Meijer, you’ll need to ensure that you have a valid and active bank account as well.

What Types of Checks Can I Cash at Meijer?

At present, Meijer accepts the following types of checks for cashing:

  • Traveler’s checks
  • Personal checks
  • Business checks

The following types of checks cannot be cashed at Meijer:

  • Cashier’s checks
  • Post-dated checks
  • Handwritten payroll checks
  • Money orders
  • Starter checks
  • Third-party checks

All checks provided for cashing must be 100% legible and not damaged in any way.

What Time is Check Cashing Services Available at Meijer?

Although most Meijer store locations are open from 6 am until midnight, some stores have chosen to open 24/7. You will be able to cash your checks at any time that your local Meijer store is open. 


When attempting to cash a check at Meijer, you’ll be asked to provide at least one form of government-issued photo ID. This can include a driver’s license, military ID or standard state ID card.

How Much are Check Cashing Fees at Meijer?

Check cashing fees will vary at Meijer stores, depending on the type of check being cashed and the face value of the check. However, fees usually vary between $3 and $5 at most per check. 

Is there any Check Cashing Limits at Meijer Stores?

When cashing your checks at Meijer, keep in mind that this franchise has limits with regards to the face value of a check that they’ll be willing to process for you. Currently, personal checks of up to $1,000 face value can be cashed, while government checks of up to $2,000 in value can be converted to cash in these stores. 

Another important point to remember is that Meijer will only cash checks that have been written within 30 days and the store is extremely strict on this policy. 

How Long Does Meijer Take to Cash Checks?

Although many other stores are willing to cash checks virtually immediately, Meijer is a little different in that you’ll normally only be able to obtain your cash from them after 7 days of initiating the transaction. This is because the franchise uses First Delta Corp’s official check cashing system, which converts your check into electronic funds and deposits the amount into your account – minus the processing fees.


You must ensure sufficient funds are available in your account to cash the check. Failure to do so will result in the store taking the appropriate legal action against you.

Can I Pay for my Purchases with a Check at Meijer?

While you can usually pay for your purchases at Meijer y using a check, it’s recommended that you stop by the customer service desk before approaching the cashier with your goods and informing them of your intention to do so. You will then be advised how to pay by check, as each store may have its own policy.

If you need to quickly access the funds from a check, Meijer may not be your best option for processing your transaction. In most cases, you will also need to be over 18 for any of their store locations to assist with check cashing services.
