Safeway Check Cashing

Learn how to cash checks at Safeway with the information below.

Safeway is a US supermarket chain that has almost 2,000 stores throughout the country and it offers a number of value added services to their customers – including the cashing of various types of checks under some circumstances.

If you are keen to learn more about how you will be able to cash a check at this popular supermarket chain, you can do so by reading the info and following the instructions below.

Will Safeway be Able to Cash a Check?

Although Safeway stores can and do cash checks, you must remember that terms and conditions are associated with using this service at any of their locations.

Safeway will only be able to cash the following types of checks as per their company policies:

  • Cashier’s checks
  • Payroll checks
  • Stimulus checks
  • Government-issued checks

Absolutely no handwritten or personal check of any type can be cashed at these stores. All checks must have the relevant information printed on them.

Whenever you intend cashing any type of check at your local Safeway store, you’ll need to ensure that you have some form of government-issued photo ID with you. If you cannot provide this at the time, your request to cash a check will be declined. You will usually also need to be over the age of 18 if you intend cashing a check at Safeway.

You will also need to be mindful of the fact that Safeway stores will not cash any type of check that exceeds $1,500 in value.

During Which Hours Can I Cash a Check at my Local Safeway Store?

In most cases, you will be able to cash your check at Safeway during their usual operating hours. However, these may vary according to store location and the time of year – extended shopping and customer service hours may be available during some peak periods, for instance.

Owing to the fact that trading hours may differ from one Safeway store to another, it’s recommended that you either call ahead or stop in at the customer service desk to confirm the hours that their check cashing services will be available.

It’s also a good idea to find out when your local Safeway store will not be as busy as usual, especially if you don’t have a lot of time to wait in line and cash your check.

What Limits are there when Cashing Checks at Safeway?

Although there is no limit to the amount of individual checks that you’ll be able to cash at Safeway, it’s important to remember that there is a maximum monetary amount that will be processed per check. Currently, this is $1,500.

While it is possible to process multiple checks at once at Safeway, each check will be carefully reviewed to determine its authenticity and to ensure that the personal details match those of the photo ID provided. If discrepancies arise on a particular check, the store will not allow you to cash it. As such, it’s recommended that you only cash a few checks at a time.

How Much Will I Pay in Fees when Cashing a Check at Safeway?

As with most other stores that offer check-cashing services, you will be charged a fee when taking advantage of this offering at Safeway.

At present, Safeway will charge a cashing fee of $2.25 for each $200 that you’re obtaining, or approximately 1.15% of a check’s face value. For example, if you were cashing a check with a face value of $1,000, you’d pay $11.25 for the service. Although this may not seem like a lot of money, it will add up substantially if you intend cashing a number of checks at a time.

If you have checks that are of a larger face value and you’d like to reduce your cashing fees as much as possible, you may want to consider using an alternative service provider.

Before attempting to cash your checks at any Safeway store, you’ll need to ensure they are 100% legible. Remember that some store locations may require you to purchase if you want to cash checks.
